Tomorrow Daniel will have his thyroid killed by radio-active iodine. He has had hyperthyroidism for probably a few years but it was just diagnosed when we got back to Texas this summer. At first he was given an anti-thyroid medicine to slow down the activity of his thyroid. Sometimes this will also make the thyroid go back to normal, but in Daniel's case, it didn't. So the most common thing doctors do these days is to kill the thyroid totally which makes the person hypothryoid. Then Daniel will just have to take a pill for the rest of his life that will keep his metabolism under control. When Daniel was first given this option by a Dr. in San Antonio, he was told that he would not be able to touch children or pregnant women for 5 days because he would be "oozing" radio-iodine at amounts that could mess with a child's thyroid. At that time I was pregnant with Maria Victoria, so we decided to hold off until we were up here in NY. Personally, I was also praying that it would still correct itself. But the Dr. up here also said he doubted any self-correction and said this radio-iodine treatment was the best way out. Yesterday when Daniel went in for the tests for how much radio-iodine he needed, the Dr. told him he would not have to be away from us for 5 days. He really didn't have to take much precautions at all because the dose he was getting was quite small, especially compared to people who are getting it because they have thyroid cancer. So, yeah!!! We don't have to send Daddy off to one of the friaries to stay. He can stay here with us, but no kissing this kiddos for 48 hours...the radio-iodine is mostly in saliva and urine. We are both relieved and will be happy to have this over with. This is a low risk procedure, but please say a little prayer that everything goes the way it is supposed to so that his metabolism is stabilized. Thanks.
